About Me

My name is Yuriy. I worked as a coach for three seasons with the US Sports Institute in NJ, providing group beginner lessons for kids ages 4-12. I also worked as a coach for two seasons with the Baltimore Tennis Patrons program, also providing group beginner lessons for kids ages 4-12. Since moving to DC, I have been expanding my coaching skills by working with beginner and intermediate adults to help them achieve their goals. I enjoy coaching all ages and skill levels - great with kids & beginners. In addition to tennis, I love playing Ultimate Frisbee and also volunteer as a frisbee coach for youth teams through the Washington Area Frisbee Club!

Began my tennis career sophomore year of High School, playing singles and learning doubles. I made my way up to junior varsity playing doubles, before having to quit the team for a summer job. While in college, I participated in Rutgers Intramural tennis, playing singles and doubles. After graduation, I continued loving the game and have been playing ever since. While living in Baltimore since 2011, I have played on several USTA indoor 3.5 and 4.0 teams to combat winter hibernation. Greatest accomplishment as a coach was to see the excitement in the kids as they learned that playing tennis is fun, and watching them improve and grow as tennis players. Greatest day though was getting to hit with John Isner and Monica Seles, and taking a few points off them.

Teaching Style

Lessons are structured based on level of comfort and experience of the students. For beginners, lessons always include warmup, hand/eye coordination drills, and personalized lesson plans to develop or improve your strokes. For intermediate or mode advance players, different drills to focus on strategy, ball placement, timing, and movement. For small groups, all students are always engaged and learning and having fun. And what would a tennis lesson be without games and playing out points?! Typical session starts out with quick stretching, followed by a light cardio warm-up to get the heart rate up. Then several tennis warm-ups to include hand-eye-ball coordination. From there, each lesson will be different, depending on your goals and interests. For beginners, the lessons include several drills focused on a specific swing (e.g. forehand/backhand volley, forehand/backhand overhead, forehand/backhand groundstroke), followed by several fun games to play out points. For intermediate students, the lessons will focus on technique for the basic strokes, as well as more advanced skills such as slice shots, approach shots, different techniques for court positioning, etc. All lessons include fun games to play out points. For groups, students get to play against me and against each other. The lesson ends with a review of what we accomplished during the lesson, what new things you learned, things to work on for the next lesson, and feedback on things you'd like to be done differently.

I wanted to learn how to play tennis the right way. Yuriy tailored his drills to fit my tennis ability (or lack thereof). I'm definitely getting better after a couple lessons. And now I'm brave enough to get closer to the net and try to volley. I had fun learning from him.

Yuriy makes learning tennis fun with all the different drills to improve muscle memory and has a ton of patience! Ground strokes, volleys, and even serves were improved.

I am new to the game of tennis and didn't exactly know what to expect when starting my first lesson with Yuriy. Even though I'm a beginner, it didn't take long before I was having a great time. He is a very knowledgeable but patient instructor. We practiced a variety of techniques and he walked me through each step multiple times until I felt comfortable. He was wonderful! I was having such a great time that the hour-long session flew by, and he even gave me a little extra time at the end to run through a few of the drills that I particularly enjoyed. Even after our session, I feel that I've improved my skills and look forward to more lessons with him. I would highly recommend Yuriy to anyone looking for a tennis instructor!
